Itanagar : Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Saturday praised veterinarians of Pakke Tiger Reserve for performing a complex orthopaedic surgery on injured pangolin.

The surgery was conducted by a medical team of  Centre for Bear Rehabilitation & Conservation (CBRC) led by its head Dr. Panjit Basumatary and assistant professor of Lakhimpur Veterinary College Dr Mridu Pavan Baishya.

The injured pangolin which was found near a road was brought for treatment at CBRC by a staff of Pakke Tiger Reserve.

The pangolin, which was suspected to have been hit by an accident, was found to have complete fracture of the right femur bone and severe spinal injuries in the lumbar region in an X-ray.

“Kudos to Dr Panjit Basumatary, Dr Mridu Pavan Baishya, and the entire medical team at the Centre for Bear Rehabilitation & Conservation, Pakke Tiger Reserve, for their good work in repairing the fractured bone of a young female Chinese pangolin with an internal plate,” Khandu wrote in a post on X.

“ Your expertise to save the pangolin are truly admirable. This also reflects our resolve to conserve and nurture wildlife,” he added.

The surgery, which took three hours, was challenging but ultimately bore fruit as the pangolin showed signs of recovery and is currently under observation and care at CBRC facility

The CBRC is jointly run by the authorities of Pakke Tiger Reseve, the environment, forest & climate change department of Arunachal Pradesh, and the Wildlife Trust of India, supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Kirloskar Ebara Pumps Ltd.
