Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mridul Kr Mahanta faced flak on social media for his ‘irresponsible’ and ‘insensitive’ statements over the lynching of two youths of Guwahati at Kangthilangso under Dokmoka police station in the district on Friday evening.

Two youths-Nilotpal Das & Abhijit Nath– who were on a trip to a remote location in Central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district were lynched by a mob suspecting the duo to be child lifters.

DC Mahanta on Saturday had said that the two youths should have informed the police before going to the area.

“They should have informed the police before going to Panjuri village. Why did they not inform police before going there? So far we know, the incident took place in the night. This apparently shows that they were there till night. I don’t think they did a right thing by staying there till night,” DC Mahanta told reporters.

The ‘insensitive’ comments of the DC have not gone down well and many social media users hit back at him with strong comments and many even have sought his demotion from his post.

“Is there anything like demotion in the service book? If it is there, the DC of Karbi Anglong should immediately be meted with that fate,” young researcher Uddipan Dutta said in a Facebook post.

Physician Dr Navanil Barua also taunted DC Mahanta for his irresponsible comments over the incident.

“The utterings of Karbi Anglong DC makes wonder, was he a Bihar board’s topper or there is a Rakesh Paul in UPSC too,” Barua commented on Facebook.

“Mr Mahanta you may be a DC but you don’t know the meaning of your post. Shame on you. It is very sad that we have a DC like you,” said M Rajbonghshi on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the AASU and AJYCP activists on Sunday staged protest in front of Dokmoka police station and demanded strict against DC Mahanta.
