Congress leader and MLA from Badarpur constituency in Assam, Jamal Uddin Ahmed is no more.

The veteran Congress leader passed away in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed breathed his last at around 2:30am on Wednesday at the Karimganj Civil Hospital.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed was a diabetes patient and had not been keeping well in recent times.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed died at the age of 66.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed was referred to the Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) from the Karimganj Civil Hospital, but he passed away before he could be shifted.

The last rites of the veteran Congress leader would be performed on Wednesday afternoon.

Leaders cutting across party lines condoled the demise of Jamal Uddin Ahmed.

Expressing grief, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Saddened to learn about the demise of veteran Congress leader and Badarpur MLA Jamal Uddin Ahmed. Praying for the departed soul, I offer my sincere condolences to his family and well-wishers.”

NEDA Convenor and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his condolences on the demise of the Congress leader.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Mourning the demise of Badarpur MLA and veteran Congress leader Jamal Uddin Ahmed. He will be remembered for his selfless contributions for the development to the State. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and well-wishers.”

Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Koliabor constituency in Assam Gaurav Gogoi also expressed grief at the demise of Jamal Uddin Ahmed.

Gaurav Gogoi said, “Saddened to learn about the passing away of two senior Congress leaders earlier this morning, Badarpur MLA Jamal Uddin Ahmed and ex-MLA Dergaon Arati Hazarika. My prayers and condolences are with their respective families.”

Assam Congress President Ripun Bora said, “Deeply Saddened to hear about passing away of Senior Congress leader & MLA of Badarpur, Assam Jamaluddin Ahmed. Extend my condolences to his family and friends.”

All India Mahila Congress President and former Lok Sabha MP from Silchar, Sushmita Dev said, “Extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Congress leader Hon’ble MLA of Badarpur, Assam Janab Jamal Uddin Ahmed Saheb. My deepest condolences.”

The demise of Jamal Uddin Ahmed is being seen as a major setback to the Congress party ahead of the Assembly elections in the State scheduled to be held in April-May this year.

With the demise of Jamal Uddin Ahmed, the Congress’ strength in the present Assam Legislative Assembly has reduced to 19.

Notably, Congress leader and former MLA from Dergaon constituency Aroti Hazarika Kachari also passed away on Wednesday due to hear ailment.
