Prema Ranjan Chakma, the incumbent president of Chakma district BJP in Mizoram resigned from the saffron party and joined the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Monday.

The former Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) councillor’s resignation comes as a major setback for the saffron party in Mizoram.

This development comes a few months after his predecessor and former MLA, AB Chakma resigned from his position citing “health issues”.

“The public is disillusioned about the BJP’s plans and policies in the CADC. There is so scope for the party’s growth here,” said Chakma, who was in Kamalnagar shortly after joining the MNF.

The party has miserably failed to fulfill the promises it had made during the council elections and state assembly elections in 2018, he said.

None of the pre-poll promises made by BJP’s central leaders, relating to direct funding, 6th schedule amendment to enhance the district council powers, etc. has been fulfilled.

Praising the ruling MNF government, he said the party’s policies and actions reflect its genuine concern regarding the development and empowerment of the masses.
