Abdul Kalam Azad, the officer-in-charge of South Salmara police station, said a police team was on the way to investigate a case on Saturday night.

“When the team reached near Mahamaya Char, the police team noticed a movement of cattle along with few suspected persons,” said Azad.

“The police party chased them and tried to stop the smugglers, but they attacked the police with sharp weapons including lathi and dao,” he alleged.

The policemen also retaliated in which one of the cattle smugglers, identified as Nurzamal, died while the three others were injured, the police official added.

In the attack of the cattle smugglers, six police personnel also received injuries as informed by the officer-in-charge of South Salmara police station.
