The issue of the ‘Tek Fog’ app is likely to be undertaken by the standing committee of the parliament for home affairs in the upcoming meeting of the committee.

A report by The Wire, stated that the chairman of the committee, Congress leader Anand Sharma, has taken a serious note of a letter by TMC MP Derek O’Brien.

A letter was written to Ananda Sharma by the TMC MP over the app named Tek Fog and asked for a discussion on the app.

O’Brien said that the ap “has serious ramifications and could jeopardise national security”.

O’Brien’s letter said, “This application is capable of penetrating encrypted messaging platforms and secure social media conversations, in order to heavily manipulate and exploit narratives on said platforms.”

As per reports, the app is capable of hijacking the ‘trending’ section of Twitter and ‘trend’ on Facebook.

App operators can also ‘auto-retweet’ or ‘auto-share’ the tweets and posts of individuals or groups. They can make extremist narratives and political campaigns appear more popular than they actually are.

It has also been alleged that the app operators can hijack ‘inactive’ WhatsApp accounts of private citizens. use their phone number to message their ‘frequently contacted’ or ‘all contacts’.
