Over 8,500 trees in Bengaluru will be axed by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) with an aim to ease traffic in the tech corridor in the city.

The decision has been lambasted by the environmentalists and a campaigning organisation Jhatkaa.org has collected over 2,500 signatures demanding an immediate stay on felling of trees.

“How could they even think of cutting the trees, some of which are 100 years old,” said the petitioners.

The environmentalists have also called for proper and accessible public consultation for all projects.

“If the unabated felling of trees continues, then very soon the city will choke to death,” they further added.

“People from all walks of like must be consulted before taking any decision in any project,” they reiterated.

The KRDCL is planning to convert the existing two-lane and four-lane roads will into four-lane and six-lane roads respectively along the stretch between Bannerghatta, Sarjapura, Mandur, Anekal and Whitefield areas of the city.
