The Gujarat Government has decided to rename dragon fruit as ‘Kamalam’.

Kamalam in Sanskrit means ‘lotus’.

The decision was announced by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Vijay Rupani said that the outer shape of dragon fruit resembles a lotus.

“The State government has decided to rename dragon fruit. As the outer shape of the fruit resembles a lotus, hence dragon fruit shall be renamed as Kamalam,” said Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

“We have applied for the patent of the dragon fruit to be called as Kamalam,” CM Rupani added.

Rupani said that as the name dragon fruit was associated with China they decided to change it.

Over the past few years, Dragon Fruit has become a popular addition to the diet in the state and is grown mainly in Bhuj, Gandhidham and Mandvi.
