Deeply worried over as to how to cope with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, finance minister of German’s Hesse state Thomas Schaefer committed suicide.

This was informed on Sunday by Minister-President of Hesse Volker Bouffier.

The 54-year-old minister was found dead near a railway track on Saturday and the Wiesbaden prosecution’s office said they believe it to be a suicide.

In a statement, Bouffier said that they were in a state of shock and immensely sad.

Thomas Schaefer was Hesse’s finance chief for 10 years and he was working tirelessly to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.

Thomas Schaefer was immensely popular among his colleagues and he was touted as a possible successor to Bouffier.
