“…there is a saying: When rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy,” Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar said.

Ramesh Kumar made this statement when Karnataka Assembly Speaker Kageri, in response to MLAs request for extending question hour, said he couldn’t and legislators should “enjoy the situation”.

Political parties and leaders have launched a scathing attack on the Karnataka Congress leader and the party for this remark.

“If you have people with such a mindset sitting in Assembly or Parliament, how can things change? This is disgusting, I am shocked,” said SP MP Jaya Bachchan.

She added: “The party must deal with them and take very strict action so that it is an example for others not to even think of such things.”

Meanwhile, union minister Smriti Irani said: “It is extremely shameful that inside Vidhan Sabha, a Congress leader has given a shameful statement about women that ‘one should enjoy while a woman gets raped’.

The Congress too criticised the remark made by Ramesh Kumar.

Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said: “He shouldn’t have said it. He is an experienced politician, a two-time speaker but there is no appreciation for whatever he said about women.”

Meanwhile, a Delhi-based NGO has filed a complaint against Ramesh Kumar with Karnataka Governor for legal action.

Ramesh Kumar, meanwhile, has apologised in the Assembly for his remark.

“If it hurts the sentiments of women, I have no problem apologising. I apologize from the bottom of my heart,” Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar said in Karnataka Assembly.

“He has apologized. Let’s not drag it further,” said Karnataka Speaker VH Kageri.
