The Panbazar all-woman police on Saturday night arrested two men for sexually assaulting their 13-year-old niece in Guwahati.
Police sources said based on a complaint filed by Gautam Sharma, a city-based journalist with an Assamese daily, police picked up Tankeswar Handique and Hiruprasad Deka on Saturday night.
Top police officials, however, have remained tight-lipped about the incident and have refused to divulge details of the case.
Sources said Handique and Deka had sexually assaulted the minor girl, who used to stay in their houses in the city, for over last one year.
She was also sexually assaulted by Debasish Deka, nephew of Hiruprasad Deka.
Debasish is absconding.
Police have registered a case (no 134/19) under POSCO Act and under section 376/ (A) (B) of the IPC against them.
The girl, a student of the city’s Panbazar Girls’ High School, came to stay in Handique’s house two years back after she had lost her father and subsequently her mother married to another man.
The teenager reportedly told her another uncle about the harassment but he allegedly refused to help her.
She then complained to her school teachers, who also reportedly did not initiate any steps.
Journalist Sharma filed a complaint at Panbazar all-woman police station when he got to know about the incident.
The girl is now in the custody of Childline.
