Agartala: The State Election Commission has rescheduled the polling date for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections to April 12, 2026, revising its earlier announcement of April 13.

The change comes in view of major tribal festivals, including Garia Puja, Biju, and Buisu, which are observed across several parts of the state on April 13. The polling date had initially been declared by the State Election Commissioner during a press conference on March 17.

The issue was subsequently raised during discussions in the budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, where concerns were expressed over a potential clash between the election process and traditional celebrations. A proposal was later adopted urging the Commission to reconsider the polling date to ensure wider participation.

Apart from legislators, various political parties and non-governmental organisations also appealed to the Commission to revise the schedule, citing the cultural and social importance of these festivals among tribal communities.

In an official press note, the State Election Commission stated that the decision to advance the polling date by a day was taken after considering all relevant factors, particularly the need to facilitate maximum voter participation across communities.

โ€œThe Commission is committed to ensuring inclusive participation in the electoral process and has accordingly decided to reschedule the polling date,โ€ the statement said.

The Commission further clarified that all other dates and timelines mentioned in the earlier notification issued on March 17 will remain unchanged.

The TTAADC elections are considered politically significant in Tripura, with a substantial number of voters from indigenous communities expected to take part in the electoral exercise.
