A mob in BJP-ruled Tripura beat to death a youth suspected of stealing cattle on Friday in a new “cow vigilante” attack.
The youth identified as Matin Miah was allegedly lynched by a mob on Sunday on suspicion of being cattle thief in Tripura’s Sipahijala district.

Sonamura sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Souvik Dey said the 29-year-old man was beaten up by some villagers in Gorurband area of Sonamura, in the wee hours of Sunday after he was found with two cows.
“Matin was caught with two cows by a mob of angry villagers, who then beat up him. He was admitted at Melaghar Sub-Divisional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday,” Indian Express quoted Dey as saying.
Police registered a case against two persons on the basis of a complaint filed by Matin’s father Shafique Miah with Sonamura police station.

According to the police, Matin had a history of cattle lifting.
Earlier in September this year, a man was lynched by a mob at Kumarghat village of North Tripura district, after he was caught with “stolen goods”.
A suspected cattle lifter was lynched at Raishyabari, a bordering village of Tripura’s Dhalai district, in July this year.
