Tripura along with other parts of the nation observed ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ on Monday with an objective to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The main programme was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, where State Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Santana Chakma was present as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Chakma said the ‘divyagyan’ also deserve equal rights like others of the society.
Chakma also said that State Government is moving towards achieving the tag of model state and the persons with disabilities have also a vital role to achieve the goal, reports tripurainfo.com.
She also said that the government is working towards providing more rights to the persons with disabilities and urged upon them to educate themselves though various skill development training to secure government jobs.
Special students organized different cultural programmes including group songs and dances to mark the occasion.
In another programme, State Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman handed over tool-kits to the trained persons who are differently-abled persons at National Career Service Centre for Differently Abled in Abhoynagar.
The Minister along with Tripura Asset Manager of ONGC, G K Singha Roy gave away 22 sewing machines and 9 laptops to divyangs, who were provided skill development training by the agency.
Speaking on the occasion, Roy Barman appreciated the concern shown by ONGC Tripura about the divyangs of the State and lauded their approach.
He specially mentioned the exemplary efforts of ONGC in providing artificial limbs to some of the talented divyangs around few months back at Agartala.
Notably, Tripura Asset Manager of ONGC, G K Singha Roy disclosed that ONGC, under its CSR scheme would be donating two computer labs to two schools, namely Monfort School and Ferrando School for speech and hearing impaired students on Tuesday.
Earlier, on the day Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman also inaugurated the observation of ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ through an exhibition on handicraft items made by them at Agartala Press Club.
