Guwahati: As many as 18 students of Tripura Medical College have been booked for allegedly ragging junior students of the institute.
An FIR was reportedly filed against the 18 second-year students on October 25, 2024 under section 4 of the Tripura Educational Institutions (prevention of ragging) Act, 1990, after the institute’s principal Dr Arindam Dutta lodged a complaint with the police.

In addition, the students have been reportedly suspended from their hostel for a period of one year by the college authorities, besides imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 on each student.
The second-year students reportedly created a group on an instant-messaging mobile application and had been allegedly threatening the first-year students to do “unwarranted” acts.

Though the police did not arrest the students as the maximum jail term under the Tripura Educational Institutions (prevention of ragging) Act is four years, notices were reportedly issued to them to appear before the police for questioning into the matter.
The police on Monday reportedly questioned four of the students.
On the other hand, an additional Rs 25,000 each was reportedly imposed on two of the students for allegedly abusing members of an NGO which was entrusted with the task to investigate the matter.
Moreover, five more second-year students were reportedly fined an additional Rs 10,000 for allegedly indulging in similar acts in the past.
