The High Level Committee formed by Meghalaya Government to examine the issues related to the shifting of the residents of Punjabi Lane (Them Iew Mawlong) is meeting for the first time later on Wednesday, even as Shillong passed a violence-free day on Tuesday amid uneasy calm.

The terms of reference of the committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is to ‘examine all relevant records and documents related to the relocation of the Sweeper Colony, Sweeper Lane, Mawlong Hat and to recommend practically feasible solutions for relocation’.

Earlier, tension prevailed in Nongmynsong area of the capital city of Meghalaya on Tuesday morning after a rumour spread that the government may shift the residents of Punjabi colony to the housing project in the locality which is meant for BPL families.

No incident of violence was reported from any part of the strife torn areas of the city on Tuesday.

Hoever, the state police force and paramilitary forces deployed in the city are leaving nothing to chances and are maintaining strict vigil to avoid any more violence.

Top officials of both the civil and police administration are monitoring the situation round the clock.

With the improvement in law and order scenario, the district magistrate also reduced the curfew timing on Wednesday.

An official statement said in Shillong agglomeration, curfew will be from 6 pm to 5 am from Wednesday. Earlier, the timing was from 4 pm.

The district magistrate also relaxed curfew from 7 am to 12 noon in areas under Lumdiengjri police station, that is Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission Compound, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Haat, including Cantonment Beat House areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge).

Curfew will be imposed from 12 noon until further orders.
