Rains continued to wreak havoc in Nagaland with Kohima district being the worst hit. Over 60 families were evacuated from their residences owing to landslides triggered by inclement rain in the district.
Emergency reliefs and temporary shelters have been provided to the affected families, Kohima District Disaster Management Authority said.
Heavy downpour in Dimapur on Tuesday night also flooded many parts of Dimapur.
The worst affected area in Kohima is the Pezielietsie Colony, Tinpatti where more than 40 families have been affected and rendered homeless. Colony residents were seen dismantling houses and shifting their belongings to safer places.
Pezelietsie Colony chairman Keduolhoulie Chiese informed that more than 40 families residing in 26 houses have been evacuated and 16 houses were severely damaged. He said a temporary makeshift camp has been arranged to enable the residents to store their belongings till a proper arrangement is made.
Sources said the Kohima district administration has been extending help to the displaced families. The rescue and operation team of Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has been assisting the residents of the affected areas.
Heavy rains washed away more than 40 percent of paddy fields at Y Anner village under Tuensang district due to overflowing of Langake river. The Y Anner Village Council on Wednesday issued a press note urging the authority concerned to do the needful for farmers who are dependent on their paddy field harvest.
An official release on Wednesday said the roads between Tobu and Mon and Tobu and Tuensang have been totally cut off following heavy rains. There were reports of shortage of food items in Tobu subdivision. Terrace cultivation fields were washed away while some houses were damaged under Tobu Assembly constituency.
Wokha deputy commissioner and chairman of District Disaster Management Authority Dr Manazir Jeelani Samoon on Wednesday said due to incessant rain in the upstream catchment areas of Doyang Hydro Electric Project, reserve water level of Doyang dam was increasing beyond the agreed imit. Samoon said the North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation is maintaining constant supervision and trying to maintain the reserve water level in the dam.
He said the excess water is being released from all the four spillway radial gates in a phase-wise manner to control flash flood in the downstream areas. Due to the constant discharge of huge volume of water from the Doyang Hydro Electrical Power Reservoir, the Doyang river in the downstream is flowing above the normal mark, he stated.
In another notification, Sanis sub divisional officer (Civil) the release of this excess volume of water from the reservoir is likely to continue for some more days due to unrelenting rainfall in the upper catchment area.
