The proposed visit of All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Rahul Gandhi to Meghalaya to campaign for the ensuing Lok Sabha election has been cancelled.
AICC president Rahul Gandhi was supposed to visit the State on Wednesday next to drum up support for the two Congress candidates Vincent Pala and former chief minister Mukul Sangma.
Sitting two time parliamentarian Vincent Pala is seeking re-election for the Shillong seat while former chief minister and present leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma is fighting the polls against National People’s Party (NPP) candidate and former union minister Agatha Sangma.
Rahul Gandhi was supposed to campaign in Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya on Wednesday.
However, sources in the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday informed that the visit of the AICC president has been cancelled as he has to go to Kerela to file his nomination papers to contest from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
Gandhi will also contest from Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. The two Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya – Shillong and Tura – will go to polls in the first phase on April 11 next. The by-election to Selsella Assembly seat will be also conducted on the same date.
