The president of the women’s wing of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Rosy Rangnai while condemning the recent incidents of minors’ rapes in Arunachal Pradesh, on Saturday suggested introduction of sex education from the primary level as a preventive measure.
It may be mentioned that recently three rape cases were reported in Namgo village under Wakro circle of Lohit district, Yingkiong in Siang district and in Daporijo. The 5-year-old girl raped in Namgo village was also murdered by the rapist. However, two persons including the alleged rapist-murder and one of his accomplices were beaten to death by villagers in Tezo town.
Rangnai said, “It is time we speak to our children about sex and tell them about things like bad and good touch.”
While addressing media persons here on Saturday, Rangnai also said that there should be a separate Sex Education department, if need be, to introduce sex education classes in both government and private schools.
The AAPSU women’s wing leader also suggested establishing women police stations in every district of Arunachal Pradesh. She pointed out that many rape cases involve persons from other States and demanded that Inner Line Permit be issued to people from outside the State only after proper verification and scrutiny.
Rangnai also said that the State government should conduct awareness campaign on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 every year and that cases under the Act should be disposed off within three months of registration of the case.
The AAPSU women wing’s president also said that a team of AAPSU women’s wing has been constituted to visit the rape victims and their family members to take first-hand information and also to monitor the legal proceedings so that they get justice.
