As many as 1,060 LHB air-conditioned coaches are fitted with fire and smoke detection systems, and 153 power cars and 68 pantry cars with fire detection and suppression systems, respectively.
Additionally, 267 air-conditioned coaches are equipped with aerosol-based fire detection systems.
The fire detection systems help detect the exact location of the fire in train coaches in case a fire breaks out. It also raises the alarm preventing the fire from spreading.
Early and reliable detection of fire incidents can prevent panic and injury thus minimising the loss of lives and assets.
To improve the fire safety measures, all power cars, pantry cars and air-conditioned coaches are being equipped with suitable fire safety devices in a phased manner.
Moreover, periodical safety drives, safety audits and inspection of railway infrastructures are being undertaken at regular intervals.
It is aimed at identifying the weak areas in asset maintenance, safety procedure and systemic defects, and to provide ways and means to prevent any untoward incident.
