The transport department of Assam government on Monday notified the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act imposing hefty penalties for violating traffic norms.
According to a government release, as per the order of the transport department of the state government, fines at different rates will be imposed for violation of different norms.

As per the order, if a person is found driving a vehicle without licence, he or she will be fined an amount of Rs 5,000.
For ‘racing and trials of speed’, a person will be fined Rs 5,000.Those, who are found violating norms for air and noise pollution, will be imposed a hefty fine of Rs 10,000.
Now, the driver of a vehicle and also the passengers are bound to use seat belt and if they are found violating this norm, Rs 1,000 will be fined.

The cars carrying children below 14 years will also have to be careful before going out as “carrying children below 14 years without safety belt/child restraint system” will cause a fine of Rs 1,000.
The middle class couples, who earlier used to move out along with their children in their motorcylce or scooty, will no longer be able to do so as Rs 1,000 will be fined for riding more than two persons in two-wheelers.
Now onwards, not only the riders but also the pillion riders will have to wear helmets, otherwise Rs 1,000 will be fined.
It may be mentioned that most of the women riders are found riding scooty in Guwahati without helmets.
The culture of riding bikes wearing helmets is also yet to grow in the rural areas.
It is hoped that the hefty fines would compel the drivers to abide by traffic rules which would help in reducing road mishaps.
If a driver fails to provide way for emergency vehicles (Fire Service or Ambulance) then he or she will be fined an amount of Rs. 10,000.
