In a jolt to the Congress in Mizoram, three members of the district council (MCD) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) on Friday joined BJP at the council headquarters in Kamalanagar.

Six former Congress councillors along with their supporters also joined the saffron party along with the three MCDs.

Their joining has strengthened BJP’s position in CADC.

The induction ceremony was attended by a number of senior Mizoram BJP leaders including state BJP president Prof JV Hluna, MLA Dr BD Chakma, former Speaker of the State Assembly and State BJP core committee member Hiphei.

In the 20-member CDAC, BJP has 5 seats, Congress 7 and the Mizo National Front (MNF) has 8 seats.

But with three elected members of Congress switching sides to BJP, the saffron party now has 8 seats and the Congress is reduced to 4 seats.

The three Congress members in the induction programme said that they see a bright prospect for the Chakmas of Mizoram only in the BJP.
