Mizoram NPP withdraws support from BJP-led Manipur government

Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Saturday urged residents to exercise “extreme caution” to prevent communal violence within the state, following recent incidents in neighboring Manipur.

Nearly 20 individuals from both the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have reportedly been killed in Jiribam district over the past week, escalating tensions in Manipur, which shares a border with Mizoram.

A statement issued by the Mizoram Home Department urged residents to refrain from actions that could provoke communal incidents.

The government pledged to continue safeguarding the safety and security of outsiders, especially those from Manipur. Similarly, it committed to protecting Mizos residing outside the state, particularly students and migrant workers in Manipur.

The state government expressed deep sorrow over the recent violent events in Manipur, which resulted in loss of life and injuries. It extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

The government urged both the central government and the Manipur government to take all necessary measures to swiftly end the ongoing conflict.

The statement highlighted the prolonged turmoil in Manipur, which has caused immense suffering to the people. Due to the violence, a significant number of individuals from Manipur have sought refuge in Mizoram. The Mizoram government and its people have provided relief measures to these affected individuals.

The government expressed gratitude to the people for their generous contributions to humanitarian aid for the internally displaced persons from Manipur.

According to the Mizoram Home Department, over 7,700 people from Manipur are currently seeking shelter in various parts of the state. These individuals, belonging to the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar-Mizo community, fled to Mizoram after ethnic violence erupted between the majority Meitei community and the minority Kuki-Zo community on May 3, 2023.
