66 candidates, including 20 females have filed their nomination papers for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections.

Secretary of Mizoram State Election Commission – Teresy Vanlalhruaii said that the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) have fielded 19 candidates each, while the BJP is contesting in only 9 seats.

She said that scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on Friday.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for February 1.

Polling for AMC will be held on February 16 and counting will be conducted on February 18.

There are 19 seats in AMC, of which 6 are reserved for women.

This time the municipal polls are expected to see a triangular contest among the MNF, Congress and ZPM.

All the parties have expressed confidence of win the polls.

A total of 2,18,870 electorates including 1,17,191 female voters will decide the fate of 66 candidates.

Polling will be held in 274 polling stations from 7am to 4pm.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used for the polling.

The AMC was established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007.

The previous AMC term ended on December 10, 2020.

In the last municipal polls held in 2015, the MNF had secured a clear majority by bagging 11 seats, while the Congress bagged 7 seats and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) had won one seat.
