The Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles has recovered 48 grams heroin from Thuampui in Mizoram’s Lunglei district.

A joint team of Assam Rifles and personnel of the state excise and narcotics department conducted seized the contraband during an operation conducted in Thuampui on March 16.

The excise and narcotics department also detained two individuals in this connection.

The heroin recovered is estimated to be worth Rs 21,60,000.

The Assam Rifles also recovered 61 gms of heroin worth Rs 27,45,000 from Durtlang Leitan in Aizwal.

Drug abuse has been a major problem in Mizoram, with the police, Assam Rifles and other departments concerned seizing huge quantities of narcotics in different parts of the state for the past few months.

A large number of youths in Mizoram are getting hooked to drug, which in turn has led to a surge in HIV-positive cases through the use of shared intravenous needles for drug abuse.
