The students, faculty and staff members of ICFAI University Mizoram burnt copies of the university’s prospectus in protest against inaction of the university’s management society – ICFAI Society – headquartered at Hyderabad regarding their various demands and requests.

The students led by the Students’ Action Committee (SAC) staged a peaceful sit-in demonstration here recently accusing the ICFAI Society, Hyderabad of not fulfilling its terms and obligations towards the ICFAI University Mizoram.

The protestors accused the ICFAI Society, Hyderabad of only using the educational institution for business and monetary gains rather than taking the educational institute to a new height.

The demands of the protestors included a revision and lowering of their fee structure, upgradation of the library and teaching facilities, provisions for playground as per the Act, development of sufficient infrastructure for the students amongst many others.

The Mizoram chief minister had sent a letter to the registrar of ICFAI Society, Hyderabad on April 5, 2019 demanding explanation of the inaction and mismanagement relating to the ICFAI University Act 2005 and the administrative manual latest by April 16, 2019. However, the society did not heed any attention towards the CM’s letter and requested an extension citing that they are pre-occupied with their board meetings.

The Mizoram government allowed an extension and summoned the society to present themselves to the government by April 24, 2019.

The students’ committee stated that the fees of the university have been increasing each year starting from 2007 to 2018.

“A high fee structure is a burden to us and we expect the authorities to adjust the fees as per the living standards of the Mizos,” the protestors said.

The Students’ Action Committee called on the registrar of ICFAI Mizoram, Joseph Lalremsanga, on April 18, 2019 and demanded the fee structure be reduced as per their request.

The registrar failed to provide any answer to their request which led to an agitation by the students. The students, faculty and staff members of the university participated in this e demonstration where they burnt copies of the university’s prospectus.

ICFAI University Mizoram was established in 2006 and became the first private university in the state after ‘The Chartered Financial Analysts of India University Mizoram Act 2006’ was passed in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly.
