The Peoples Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) on Monday kicked off a signature campaign to signal a move towards suing the Election Commission of India (ECI).

They believe the ECI was engaged in misconduct by giving voting rights in Mizoram to Brus residing in Tripura and plan to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

PRISM president Vanlalruata said, “The reason the Bru’s residing in Tripura were allowed to vote in Mizoram is because ECI unlawfully proclaimed them as ‘ordinary residents of Mizoram’.”

The ECI does not have any authority to make such declarations, he observed.

They have based the declaration on the Jammu and Kashmir Representation of the People Act which is why we have decided to file PIL against the ECI, he added.

To show our solidarity in filing the PIL, we have organised a signature campaign today where those supporting the PIL can give in their names, said PRISM vice president K Tlanthanga.
