SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government is mulling to push the Centre to designate the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) as an Institute of National Importance (INI).

This was informed by Meghalaya health minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.

Meghalaya health minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that she plans to address this issue during her upcoming meeting with the union health minister in New Delhi next week.

“The primary agenda is to elevate NEIGRIHMS to the status of a national institute, akin to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),” Lyngdoh stated.

“It is crucial that NEIGRIHMS is recognized on the same level as other premier institutions.”

Additionally, Lyngdoh said that there is an urgent need to fast-track and operationalise a cancer hospital adjacent to the NEIGRIHMS campus.

“This is a vital project, and we intend to highlight its importance to the union health minister,” she said.

Lyngdoh also mentioned that she has requested the NEIGRIHMS director to accompany her during the meeting to provide comprehensive insights and support.
