A case has been registered and investigation has begun over several fake Twitter accounts, which are being run in the name of Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Meghalaya Police took up the case and has begun a probe into the matter after the Raj Bhawan authorities approached it.

The Raj Bhawan also submitted a list of such accounts to the police.

There are at least eight fake Twitter accounts, which are being operated by imposters in the name of the Governor, Raj Bhawan officials said.

Officials in the Raj Bhawan said that “derogatory and offensive materials which are prejudicial to the high office of the Governor of Meghalaya” are being posted by these fake accounts, which are created in the name of Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik.

The Twitter accounts were made with the intentions of cheating, committing fraud, harming and maligning the reputation of the governor in violation of the Information Technology Act, Raj Bhawan officials added.

“Mr Malik had on March 24 created a Twitter account, having the username of @SatyapalMalik6, and that is his official Twitter handle,” said Raj Bhawan officials.
