Guwahati: A National Lok Adalat was conducted across Meghalaya on Saturday, resulting in the resolution of 151 cases with settlements totalling about Rs 1.61 crore, according to an official release.
The initiative was organised by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority under the banner of the National Legal Services Authority.
Proceedings took place at the High Court of Meghalaya as well as district courts throughout the state, except for courts in the Garo Hills area.
As stated in the release, a combined total of 496 matters were placed before the Lok Adalat for consideration. These included 168 disputes at the pre-litigation stage and 328 cases that were already pending before courts.
Out of these, 151 matters were resolved through mutual agreement, with settlements amounting to Rs 1,61,66,675.
The statement also noted that the programme was carried out under the leadership of Revati Mohite Dere, Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya and Patron-in-Chief of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority.
The event was supervised by H. S. Thangkhiew, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya and Executive Chairman of the authority, along with W. Diengdoh, Judge of the High Court and Chairperson of the High Court Legal Services Committee.
According to officials, the Lok Adalat session held on March 14 covered the High Court and district courts across the state, excluding the Garo Hills region, and was conducted as part of the nationwide programme of the National Legal Services Authority.
