Japanese company YATS Corporation Co. Ltd will set up a spawning centre at the Mushroom Development Centre in Upper Shillong.

The company is involved in providing techniques to Meghalaya for cultivating Shhiitake mushroom.

Spawn is used by mushroom growers much like seeds are used by gardeners and farmers.

The spawn will be distributed to farmers in the state and grow the same in their respective areas.

On Saturday, two representatives of the YATS Corporation visited the site at Upper Shillong and measured the size of the area for creating the spawning centre for Shiitake mushroom.

Assistant director, Horticulture, S Kharlukhi was also present during the visit, besides representatives of the Hill Farmers’ Union.

The Meghalaya government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with YATS Corporation Co. Ltd. in order to boost cultivation of Shiitake mushroom in the state.

Shiitake in Japanese (Lentinula edodes) is an edible mushroom native to East Asia, which is cultivated and consumed in many Asian countries.

It is considered a medicinal mushroom in some forms of traditional medicine.

In Khasi, the Shiitake mushroom is known as ‘Tit Tung’.

The Meghalaya government has also launched the ‘Mushroom Mission’ with an aim to scale up mushroom production through mission mode in the entire state.
