Guwahati: The All India Garo Union (AIGU) has submitted a memorandum to an expert committee reviewing quota policies in Meghalaya.
The AIGU expressed concern that any modifications to the existing 40:40 quota system for the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo communities could lead to riots.

The memorandum highlights the socio-economic disparity between the two communities, arguing that the current quota system is necessary to uplift the Garos.
The AIGU urged the committee to maintain the status quo, emphasizing that changing the policy would hurt the Garos and destabilize the state.

The AIGU further claimed that calls for reviewing the quota system are politically motivated and insensitive to the needs of the Garo people. They asserted that such efforts only serve the interests of a particular political party and disregard the existing inequalities.
