There has been a rise in number of cases of crime and violence against women in Meghalaya.

A total of 350 cases of crimes and violence against women were reported in Meghalaya last year till August.

This was informed by Director of Meghalaya Social Welfare Department – DD Shira.

“Despite Meghalaya being a matrilineal society, we have witnessed a rise in cases of crime against women,” Director of Meghalaya Social Welfare Department, DD Shira said.

The total number of cases of domestic violence reported between March and August last year, when COVID-19 induced lockdown was in place is 90.

A total of 114 cases of crimes and violence against women were registered with the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission throughout 2020.

DD Shira, Director of Meghalaya Social Welfare Department further said that it is the prerogative of the State Government to ensure safety of every woman in the State.

“The Home and Police Departments and the Government are working hand in hand to ensure that there is a decline in the number of cases of violence and crime against women in the State,” Director of Meghalaya Social Welfare Department, DD Shira said.
