A disturbing video has gone viral in the social media, where a man from Ukhrul district in Manipur is seen killing a cow by shooting at the head from a close range.

While the man killed the roped cow, onlookers recorded the act on mobile phone cameras.

A case has been registered against the man after People For Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote to the police seeking action under the law that deals with cruelty against animals.

The accused has been identified as Wungshungmi Hungyo.

The case has been registered under sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Ukrul district is located some 80 kilometres away from Manipur Capital Imphal.

The video, which is being widely shared in social media shows the cow screaming in pain.

“PETA India would like to thank Manipur Police for registering the case and sending out a clear message that brutality on animals would not be tolerated,” PETA India said.

Meanwhile, the police has investigated the video and also identified the suspect.

PETA said that as per researches, people who commit acts of cruelty against animals are often repeated offenders who move on to hurt other animals or humans.

“The trauma this cow must have gone through is hard to imagine. Since people who are cruel to animals often move on to harming humans, it’s imperative for the public to report cases of cruelty to animals such as this one for society’s safety,” PETA India further said.

“In a study of domestic violence victims, 60% of women said that their abusive partners had harmed or killed their dogs or other animals,” PETA said.
