North Lakhimpur: Police in Tamil Nadu have arrested a man from Assamโ€™s Lakhimpur district for allegedly issuing death threats to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through a social media post.

Lakhimpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gunendra Deka confirmed the arrest during a press conference at his office in North Lakhimpur on Friday.

The accused, identified as Joon Das, is a resident of Ghilamora in Lakhimpur district. According to SSP Deka, police apprehended him from his workplace in Tamil Nadu after an FIR was registered against him over the alleged threat. He was arrested from a household under Ayakudi Police Station in Palani, Dindigul district.

Police said Das uploaded a video on Facebook on October 18 in which he allegedly threatened to kill Chief Minister Sarma and people belonging to his Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). In the video, he reportedly accused them of having a role in the mysterious death of noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg last year.

Following the circulation of the video, Pankaj Doley filed an FIR against Das on October 23, alleging that the social media post was inflammatory and offensive.

SSP Deka also disclosed that Das was the president of the Subansiri unit of the Veer Lachit Sena.

Describing the video as inflammatory, the SSP said such content could potentially provoke violence and disrupt public order. He added that the police were taking all necessary legal steps to ensure appropriate action against the accused.

Das was produced before a judicial magistrate in Dhakuakhana on Friday and subsequently remanded to six days of police custody for further investigation.
