The Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved the scheduled dates for conducting polls to the two autonomous district councils in the State – Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Announcing this after the State Cabinet meeting chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the proposal of the District Council Affairs Department has been approved in connection with the scheduled dates for the holding elections to the two district councils.

Revealing the scheduled dates, Tynsong said that the date of polling to the two district councils will be held on February 27, 2019 and counting of votes on March 2, 2019.

The publication of draft electoral rolls of the KHADC and JHADC is January 12, 2019 and last date for filing of claims and objections on January 22, 2019, disposal of claims and objections on January 26, 2019 and final publication of final electoral rolls of the two district councils is January 30, 2019.

Tynsong said that a notification for calling of the district council constituencies to elections is February 2, 2019, and the model code of conduct will also come into force from this day.

Tynsong informed that the last date for filing of nomination is February 7, 2019, scrutiny of nominations on February 8, 2019 and withdrawal of nomination papers on February 9, 2019.

Stating that there was no mention in the Sixth Schedule t the Constitution about the model code of conduct, Tynsong said that the State Election Department will come out with the model code conduct for the elections to the district councils too.

The five-year tenure of both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council will expire in February 2019.

The last elections to the two district councils were held on February 24, 2014 and the votes were counted on February 27, 2014.
