Electioneering for the by-election to the high profile Ampati Assembly seat ended on Saturday at 5 pm with both Congress and NPP organizing their last and final rallies at various places to woo the voters.

The campaign however came to its end amid complaint and counter complaint between Congress and NPP on the alleged attempt to use money to convince voters to vote for their respective candidates.

“The campaign ended peacefully without any report of untoward incidents,” Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor said.

Three candidates are in the fray including Congress candidate, Miani Dalbot Shira, eldest daughter of Mukul Sangma, former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition in Assembly, National People’s Party nominee Clement G Momin, and Independent candidate Subhankar Koch.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma along with ministers, MLAs and leaders of political parties that are part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government campaigned intensively in the last one week and urged voters of Ampati to vote for NPP candidate so that the constituency will be part of the government.

Similarly, Mukul Sangma has been campaigning in Ampati for the past few months. He campaigned in various places. Other Congress MLAs and leaders from across the state also appealed to voters of Ampati to elect Miani D Shira so that she can continue the good work that Mukul Sangma as MLA had done for Ampati constituency in the past 25 years.
