Imphal: Manipur Police arrested two individuals on Sunday following the abduction and assault of four police personnel on Saturday, according to an official statement released on Monday.
The arrested men, identified as Taibanganba Sanoujam (25) and Moirangthem Bobo (40), are reportedly members of the socio-cultural group Arambai Tenggol. The statement added that authorities are searching for other individuals involved in the incident.
A zero FIR (First Information Report) filed at Kangpokpi Police Station alleges that over 30 armed miscreants assaulted the four police personnel.
The personnel, belonging to the Village Defence Force (VDF) and stationed at Kangpokpi Police Station, are from Manipur‘s Nepali and Muslim communities.
The incident occurred on May 11, when the miscreants reportedly intercepted the officers’ vehicle near Koirengei, about 7 kilometers from Imphal, while they were returning from duty assignments.
Tribal organizations, including the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) and Sadar Hills, condemned the attack.
In protest, a 24-hour shutdown was called on May 12th, with volunteers blocking National Highway 2 and disrupting traffic flow. Shops and businesses in Kangpokpi Town and surrounding areas also remained closed throughout the day.
