Imphal: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) attended an awareness programme at the Sub-Divisional Officerโ€™s office in Waikhong, Kakching district, on Thursday, as the Manipur government continues efforts towards phased rehabilitation following the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.

Officials said 398 IDPs participated in the programme, which was attended by district authorities and relief camp volunteers.

The district administration has, in recent days, initiated the closure of relief camps in Kakching, citing an improvement in the law and order situation. As of March 31, 11 camps had been identified for closure, with the process largely completed by early April.

Officials said that by April 1, at least nine camps had been shut, with around 900 to 1,000 IDPs resettled in areas including Sugnu, Wapokpi, Tengjeng, and Serou. While a majority of families have returned to their homes, nearly 200 individuals continue to remain in temporary shelters due to security concerns or damage to their residences.

IDPs from more vulnerable locations, such as Moreh and Napat, are being relocated to a consolidated facility at Yangbi Girlsโ€™ High School in Wabagai as part of the rehabilitation process.

In neighbouring Thoubal district, the government has extended financial assistance through direct benefit transfer (DBT) to displaced families, particularly those housed at the Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex.

The state government has outlined a plan to close all relief camps by December 2026, with rehabilitation being carried out in phases. As of March 2026, around 16,500 individuals from approximately 3,700 families have been resettled across affected districts.
