Guwahati: The Manipur government has lifted the temporary restriction on mobile internet, data services, and VPN use in five districts, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur, after reassessing the law and order situation and the difficulties faced by residents.

Authorities introduced a three-day restriction in the affected districts on April 7, citing serious security concerns at the time.

The directive had halted mobile data usage, along with broadband, VSAT, and VPN services, as a precautionary step. Later, the suspension of mobile internet was extended from time to time, while limited access to broadband connections such as ILL and FTTH was allowed under strict conditions.

Authorities stated that the restoration of services came after reviewing ground conditions and the extent of disruption caused by the internet shutdown. The suspension had disrupted operations across multiple institutions such as courts, hospitals, schools, and offices that depend heavily on digital connectivity.

Acting under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, the Governor removed all restrictions on mobile internet and related services in public interest.

The notification was released immediately due to the urgent situation and is being circulated through both print and digital media to inform the public.

Authorities have also advised people to use internet platforms and social media carefully and responsibly, warning that any misuse could lead to the reimposition of restrictions.
