Guwahati: Unrest broke out in Manipur’s Bishnupur district following a fresh clash after protesters stopped three private vehicles carrying armed security personnel in civilian clothes, leaving 21 civilians injured.

Police said five people have been taken into custody.

According to police, the incident took place around 1.30 pm near Thinungei when locals blocked the movement of the security team after rumours began circulating about the identity and purpose of those inside the vehicles.

A large crowd gathered and halted the convoy, and the situation worsened when some individuals turned aggressive, attacking the vehicles and setting two of them on fire.

Two of the three vehicles were burned during the incident, as some residents suspected that the occupants were Kuki militants travelling in plain clothes.

Additional police teams were sent to the spot to bring the situation under control, which led to clashes with the protesters.

Police said at least 21 protesters suffered minor injuries during the confrontation, and five individuals were detained.

Following the incident, the district magistrate imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita from 5 pm until further notice, limiting public movement in the area.
