Imphal: A joint team of central and Manipur police arrested two underground cadres allegedly involved in extortion and other criminal activities, averting potential tragedies by detecting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and firearms along the Indo-Myanmar border.
According to a Manipur Police morning bulletin on Wednesday, the arrests and seizures occurred on Tuesday.
In the first phase of intelligence-based combing and search operations, the joint team arrested an active cadre of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party – Apunba (KCP-Apunba), Thokchom Tompok Singh (27), of Chana Mayai Leikai, from his residence under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district.
In a second-phase operation on the same day, Urikhinbam Bijeshranjan Meitei, alias Abaicha (24), also a KCP-Apunba cadre and a resident of Yourabung Khunou under Lamlai Police Station, was apprehended from his residence. A mobile phone was seized from him.
During the final phase of the operation on Tuesday, the team recovered arms, ammunition, and IEDs from the forest area of Saivom Ridge under Tengnoupal Police Station, Tengnoupal district.
The recovered items include four 9 mm pistols, four 9 mm pistol magazines, 12 IEDs, clothing items, and uniforms, including a combat shirt, two pairs of combat pants, two combat jackets, a combat cap, and a combat handbag.
The IEDs were destroyed in situ, the police report added. The arrested individuals and seized items were later handed over to the respective police stations for further legal action.
