Manipur: One arrested with 4 kg of pangolin scales in Imphal

Imphal: The Central Forest Division in Manipur seized a substantial consignment of 4 kilograms of Chinese pangolin scales and apprehended one suspected smuggler in Imphal.

The suspected smuggler was identified as Khuiramlungbou Kalengtan of Lenglong Tamei, Tamenglong District of Manipur.

N Ganesh, Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division in a statement said that the arrest and seizure were made on Monday (November 11, 2024) at Chingmeirong Khongnang Karak general area in Imphal West district.

Forest officials said that the accused was arrested for illegal transportation and illegal trade.

If found guilty, he is punishable with 3-7 years imprisonment and a fine not less than Rs 25,000.

The accused is booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

It may be mentioned that pangolins, critically endangered due to illegal poaching driven by demand for their scales, are protected under national and international laws, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The scales are often trafficked globally for use in traditional medicine and as luxury items.
