Imphal: A 61-year-old woman died by suicide in a relief camp in Manipur‘s Imphal East district on Monday, police officials said.

The incident occurred around 4 PM inside a prefabricated house at Sawombung in the district.

The woman identified as Amusana Thiyam, a resident of Leitanpokpi village, had been living in the relief camp since October 2023 after being displaced by the ongoing ethnic violence.

Her family members were not present at the time of the incident. “Her husband had left the camp to pick up their granddaughter, and her son was out of town for work,” said a police official.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident highlights the increasing distress faced by those displaced by the violence, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, said an inmate of the relief camp.
