Imphal: Indian security forces deployed along the Myanmar border apprehended an alleged member of the foreign-based Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B), along with a pistol, during a special operation in Manipurโs southern border district of Churachandpur on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off from sources across the border, personnel of the Assam Rifles launched a surprise anti-insurgency operation, leading to the arrest of the insurgent cadre, later identified as Lal Thang John.
The arrested individual is a resident of Zoveng village in Churachandpur district, who had allegedly travelled to Myanmar to receive basic military training before joining the KNA-B outfit.
The KNA-B is an insurgent group operating along the Indo-Myanmar border, seeking a separate administration for several years. Official sources said the arrested cadre had reportedly infiltrated back into Churachandpur from Myanmar and was suspected of planning movement towards the UkhrulโLitan axis in Manipur to create unrest in the region.
The arrest and seizure took place while the KNA-B is accused of trespassing into Kamjong district, where it had allegedly torched several houses in three villages, Namlee, Wanglee, and Choro, and stolen several vehicles in pre-dawn attacks on Thursday.
Officials reported that the arrested individual, along with the seized weapon, was handed over to the concerned police station for further legal proceedings.
