Guwahati: Manipur MLA Leishiyo Keishing on Friday accused insurgent groups based across the Myanmar border of launching attacks on villages in Manipur’s Kamjong district, saying the incident represented a new security threat from outside the state.
Speaking about the violence reported from the Phungyar sector, the legislator said Manipur had been witnessing prolonged unrest and ethnic tensions over the past few years, but the latest incident differed because it allegedly involved armed groups operating from Myanmar.
Keishing claimed the attacks occurred in the early hours of May 7, when armed men targeted villages situated near the border areas of Kamjong district.
He named the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and the People’s Democratic Force as the groups allegedly involved in the attacks in Kasom and Kamjong areas.
According to him, multiple homes were destroyed and several properties were looted during the violence.
He said Choro village suffered major damage, with most houses in the village gutted by fire while the church remained unaffected.
He also alleged that three houses were burned in Wangli village and one in Namli village, besides incidents of looting in nearby areas.
The MLA said the attacks triggered panic among villagers, forcing residents from Choro, Aloyo, Namlee and Wanglee to leave the area for safer places.
