Guwahati: A fisherman lost his life after drowning in the Loktak Lake in Manipur, police said on Monday.

As per officials, the incident took place on Sunday during a storm.

Khwairakpam Thoi (54) from Ithing Awang Leikai, tragically drowned in Loktak Lake, Bishnupur district during the massive storm.

The incident occurred during a storm that swept across the area early in the morning.

According to Thoi’s family, he ventured out on the lake around 5 am to retrieve his fishing nets.

While other fishermen sought refuge in their Phumsangs (floating huts) as the storm intensified, Thoi reportedly attempted to reach his nets when the weather seemed to calm slightly.

Despite warnings from other fishermen to wait for the storm to subside completely, Thoi proceeded on the water.

When the storm cleared and other fishermen ventured out again, Thoi’s boat was found empty.

A search ensued, and Thoi’s body was discovered underwater.

The Keibul Lamjao Police Station has registered a case regarding the incident.
