Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated on Friday that following the 2023 ethnic crisis, drug trafficking routes have significantly shifted.
He noted that the illicit trade has largely been diverted through Mizoram, though smaller quantities are still routed from Moreh to Churachandpur via roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
From Churachandpur, he added, the primary distribution point is Kwakta in Bishnupur district. The Chief Minister made these remarks while speaking at the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026, held at the Main Auditorium of the City Convention Centre in Imphal.
The event was organised by the Department of Social Welfare under the theme, “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister recalled that in the late 1970s, heroin use among youth was prevalent; however, it was extremely expensive and largely affordable only for children from affluent families. Today, the scenario is drastically different.
Reflecting on a recent interaction with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from Kwakta, he said he was informed that nearly 70 per cent of the areaโs youth are involved in drug abuse.
He further said drug peddlers often allow users to purchase narcotics on credit, making access easier.
Consequently, areas adjoining Kwakta, including Moirang, Kumbi, and Thanga, have become highly vulnerable.
The Chief Minister called for individual responsibility and collective efforts from local clubs, Meira Paibis, and CSOs to build a drug-free society.
