Guwahati: Mizoram will require an estimated Rs 879.82 crore for recovery and reconstruction following a series of disasters between 2021 and 2025, according to the state’s Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report reviewed at a meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Thursday.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma and attended by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) member Rita Massal, reviewed the impact of Cyclone Remal, African Swine Fever (ASF), heavy rainfall, landslides and rodent outbreaks that affected parts of the state during the period.
According to the PDNA, the disasters caused damage estimated at Rs 656.76 crore, while the overall economic loss was pegged at Rs 634.35 crore. Based on the assessment, the state has projected a recovery and reconstruction requirement of Rs 879.82 crore.
The SDMA also reviewed the Mizoram State Disaster Management Plan 2026 and disaster management plans prepared by all 11 districts, with discussions focusing on strengthening disaster preparedness and response.
Members also reviewed measures to strengthen the Project Management Units implementing the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Project, National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project and the Mitigation Scheme for Forest Fire Risk Management.
The meeting further discussed the implementation of the Emergency Response Support System, the selection of 178 projects worth Rs 11.44 crore under the Recovery and Reconstruction Fund for 2024-25, procurement of additional search and rescue equipment, and a proposal to declare African Swine Fever a state-specific disaster without a specified timeframe for assistance from the State Disaster Response Fund.
Among those present were Home Minister K Sapdanga, PWD Minister Vanlalhlana, Health Minister Lalrinpuii, Power and Electricity Minister F Rodingliana, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma, and senior government officials.
