The opposition Congress has announced the names of its candidates for the forthcoming bypolls to five legislative Assemblies in Manipur.

The Assembly bypoll is scheduled to be held on November 7.

The central election committee of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) issued a press release in this regard on its official Twitter handle on Saturday.

The candidates include former minister Moirangthem Hemanta Singh for Wangjing-Tentha, former MLA Salam Joy Singh for Wangoi, Md Azziul Haque Khan for Lilong and Lamtinthang Haokip for Saitu (ST) constituency.

However, the party is yet to announce its candidate for Singhat (ST) constituency.

The bypolls for five seats – Wangoi, Wangjing-Tentha, Lilong, Saitu (ST) and Singhat (ST) in Manipur were necessitated after the sitting MLAs resigned as members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly in August.

Currently, 13 Assembly constituencies are lying vacant in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly after the resignation and disqualification of MLAs.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently announced the names of 4 candidates for the upcoming Manipur bypolls.

They are – Oinam Lukhoi Singh for Wangoi, Paonam Brojen for Wangjing-Tentha, Ngamthang Haokip for Saitu (ST) and Ginsuanhau Zou for Singhat (ST) Assembly constituency.

Earlier this month, the Election Commission of India announced bypolls to five Manipur constituencies to be held on November 7.

The last date for filing nominations is October 20 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is October 23.

The dates set aside for counting and completion of the election process, are November 10 and 12 respectively.

The BJP-led government in Manipur was formed in 2017 with the support of four NPP and four NPF MLAs each besides one MLA each from TMC, Lok Janshakti Party and an Independent MLA in the 60-member House.
